I interviewed a company in Fukuyama that operates a small-scale unitary pig farm. I learned that the domestic pig farming industry could shift to large-scale operations thanks to cheap, labor-saving imported feed. I was astonished to hear the president ask, “Can pigs raised on imported feed be domestically produced pork?” Can we call that self-sufficiency? I recall that the shortage of semiconductors under the Corona had a knock-on effect on all industrial production. Putting aside the history of the situation, we saw the problem of food self-sufficiency, which we must take action on, and it made us think about what it means to be self-sufficient as a country.
