When selling products abroad, an essential element is Japanese-ness. I interviewed a company that exhibited a casual jacket made of sashiko-style fabric on the US crowdfunding website Kickstarter. Sashiko is a handwork in which straight lines and patterns are embroidered on cloth with thread and was conceived to reinforce precious material and increase its warmth. Nowadays, it is used as an industrial product, mainly for road clothes, but it is popular in handcrafts overseas as ‘Sashiko. I was delighted to see that a technique born from Japanese handwork is being disseminated as a new product.
