During Golden Week Holiday, I attended a wild boar meat barbecue. I had eaten it several times before but was surprised by its taste. I immediately interviewed the meat supplier, a slaughterhouse, about giber and hunting for this issue’s unique feature. We learned that hunting is a culture rooted in the local community and that there are clues to solving local problems. To reduce the damage caused by birds and beasts to crops and other animals, it is important that people have access to the Satoyama landscape, undeveloped woodland near a populated area. I realized that the hints for a sustainable society do not lie in a completely new field but in the warmth of the past.
